High School's sophom*ores set a school scoring record by defeating the host James Marshall team 81 to 29 in a basketball game Leading the scoring attack was Dick White with 16 points Dave Little had 20 rebounds for the winners The total erased the 80 figure which was accomplished by Encina last year against Encina Grapplers Defeat San Juan The latter is composed of some of the larger schools from the Coast Counties League su ch as Monterey Salinas and Carmel It figures that the Camellia will try to dip into the Diablo Valley Foothill Mann County and a olic Athletic Leagues to fill the remaining spots in the field of eight GEL Is Possibility Also a possibility is that the Camellia will attempt to interest the Golden Empire League as a regular participant And a move of that sort would be a giant step towards an eventual Sac-Joaquin Section tournament Such sectional level tournaments are the rule in Southern California Las year the Central Section of the CIF held its first tourney and this season the Northern Athletic League will sponsor an invitational which openly is a forerunner to a North Section tournament In fact the 19 year old Acker Tournament a unique event staged in Chico Oroville and Redding on a rotating basis is dead The Siskiyou County Modoc-Lassen and Feather River leagues as well as the NAL are in the new lineup already Naturally promoters of the tourney hope the Westside Sacramento Valley and Pioneer Leagues will follow suit in the near future Camellia Is Tops But meanwhile in the metro area the Camellia Tournament is the big show With nothing but turnaway crowds last year at the Sacramento High School Pavilion the tournament despite fairly stiff netted a handsome profit in the neighborhood of $1600 Each participating school received some $180 and inasmuch as transportation was the only notable item which the schools had to bear the Camellia Tournament proved to be a profitable trip for everyone Visiting teams are housed and fed in private homes which wipes out a large financial responsibility Hopefully some day the Camellia tournament will be housed in a multipurpose arena where instead of crowds of 3500 the prepsters will be playing before 10- 000 State Tourney And if it ever comes to a section tournament this department suggests that it be a stepping stone to a state tourney While the addition of the Sierra Foothill Valley Oak and Golden Empire leagues would be though it wouldn't necessarily raise the caliber of a Camellia tournament the inclusion of Superior California or Mother Lode or Trans Valley schools would do nothing but guarantee an opening City Men's Basketball Northern Division Fuchsias 51 Unknowns 29 championship Coast Division Em 30 Ben Ail Rookies 21 Encina High School's
