Lok Sabha Election Results 2024 Highlights: Narendra Modi on Wednesday resigned as the Prime Minister of India and is likely to take oath for a third consecutive term on June 8. The new Cabinet of Modi 3.0 is also likely to take oath on the same day. Modi met President Droupadi Murmu earlier in the day to tender his resignation and is set to meet her again with letters of support from NDA parties to stake claim to form the government. The developments come a day after the National Democratic Alliance emerged on top in the Lok Sabha elections, winning 293 of the 543 seats. The Opposition alliance of 28 parties under the INDIA banner collectively managed 232 seats, 40 short of the majority mark.

Election Results 2024 LIVE: INDIA leads NDA in India’s biggest states

A majority of the seats that the BJP has lost since the previous elections have come from large states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and West Bengal. The BJP, which secured 62 of the 80 seats in 2019, has been restricted to 38 seats. In Maharashtra, the MVA is leading in 28 of the 48 seats while the NDA is leading 19 seats. In the 2019 polls, the NDA bagged 41 of them. In West Bengal, the BJP’s tally dropped to 10 seats from 18 in 2019 while the TMC is leading in 31.

The Lok Sabha elections were held in seven phases between April 19 and June 1. Over 8,000 candidates were in fray in 543 Lok Sabha constituencies. A total of 62.4 crore voters exercised their franchise braving extreme weather conditions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath conducted over 300 election programmes through their three-months-long election camapign.
